A virtual mail domain (like @cam.ac.uk) is one where all the
addresses redirect to a different domain that has a message store
(like @hermes.cam.ac.uk).

Hubbed servers talk to the outside world via ppsw, and non-hubbed
ones send and receive email directly. Part of the job ppsw performs
for hubbed servers is to protect them from abuse by attackers out on
the Internet.

Hermes and CUS used to do the outgoing relay ("smarthost") job for
their respective users, but ppsw is taking over so that its virus
filtering can be more effective.

Some non-hubbed servers don't use ppsw at all.
